Update Ubuntu, Debian or Linux Mint

Time 6 min Level Beginner Updated

On Debian-based distributions, the apt package manager updates the system and your software in one go. Snap and Flatpak apps update separately.

  1. Open the terminal

Press Ctrl + Alt + T. Commands with sudo ask for your password; nothing appears while you type, which is normal.

  2. Refresh the package list

    sudo apt update
    bash

This changes nothing on the system: it fetches the list of available versions.

  1. Install the updates

    sudo apt upgrade -y
    bash
  2. Remove unused packages

    sudo apt autoremove -y
    bash
  3. Update Snap and Flatpak

If you use these app formats:

    sudo snap refresh
    flatpak update -y
    bash

Good to know : To move to a new Ubuntu release, use sudo do-release-upgrade after backing up your files.
